Why watch Bhagwat is trying to make TypeScript the default place developers ship agents, with the same docs seriousness the Gatsby team brought to the web.

Sam Bhagwat is co-founder and CEO of Mastra, an open-source TypeScript framework for building AI agents. He is best known as co-founder of Gatsby and wrote the book Principles of Building AI Agents, he said on Software Engineering Daily.

Building a CRM Called Kepler

After Gatsby, Bhagwat and his co-founders spent about nine months building a CRM they called Kepler. "We were pretty exhausted from doing DevTools for so long," one of them said. As they built its AI features with the TypeScript AI libraries then available, none seemed good enough.

Pulling the Plug in October 2024

"This was in October of last year, so October of 2024, when we decided to pull the plug on the CRM and start building Mastra instead," Bhagwat said. Mastra bet that the application layer of AI would move toward TypeScript, according to Scaling DevTools.
