Barry McCardel is co-founder and CEO of Hex, the collaborative data workspace he started in late 2019 with two colleagues from Palantir, including Caitlin Colgrove.
Unholy Things in Excel
He has worked in data his whole career, he told Matt Turck: writing R scripts as an undergraduate, then "doing unholy things in Excel as a consultant," then five years at Palantir. He then worked closely with the data team at his next company.
Sharing Analysis Across Hex Customers
Along the way he kept seeing the same problems. The first one Hex set out to solve was sharing work: analysts and data scientists across a business doing useful analysis that was hard to pass on to everyone else.
