Yoav Shoham
Co-founder and Chairman
AI21 Labs
Yoav Shoham is co-founder and chairman of AI21 Labs, an Israeli company building language models. AI21’s about page lists Ori Goshen as CEO. He is a professor emeritus of computer science at Stanford University, according to The Pulse of AI.
Remembering AI from the 1980s
"Because I'm ancient, I remember artificial intelligence from the 80s," Shoham told Ynet, recalling 28 years as a computer science professor at Stanford. "In the 90s, we had the 'AI Winter', when you could hardly admit you were working with artificial intelligence." His research spans artificial intelligence, logic, and game theory, and he initiated the AI Index.
Launching a Language Lab in Early 2018
Shoham, Ori Goshen, and Professor Amnon Shashua set out in early 2018 to build an AI tool based on natural language that would change how people write and read, according to Ynet. The company began as what Ynet called a sleepy genius lab and grew quickly after ChatGPT launched in 2022. "Dip your toes in the water of AI. There's no substitute for experience," he told Calcalist's CTech.
