Why watch Tannor argues ML and LLM systems need continuous validation the way software needs tests.

Philip Tannor is co-founder and CEO of Deepchecks, which builds open-source and commercial tools for testing and validating machine learning and LLM systems. He co-founded it with Shir Chorev, its CTO.

Leading Machine Learning Research in the Israeli Military

Tannor earned a BSc in physics from the Hebrew University as part of the Talpiot excellence program and an MSc in electrical engineering from Tel Aviv University, according to his DeveloperWeek speaker profile. He led a machine learning research group working on language, computer vision, and signal processing. Tannor and Chorev both worked on machine learning in the Israeli military, TechCrunch reported, and Chorev said they saw firsthand the power and limits of the technology.

Betting Deepchecks on Open Source in January 2022

In January 2022 Tannor and his team pivoted from building enterprise-first software to making open source their core offering, Hetz Ventures wrote. He has said the change made the company more aligned with its goals and drew more people who wanted to work with it. In 2023 Deepchecks announced a $14 million seed round led by Alpha Wave Ventures, along with general availability of the open-source version.
