Why watch Vasnetsov built Qdrant because existing vector libraries were not enough for production similarity search at scale.

Andrey Vasnetsov and André Zayarni set out in 2021 to use vector similarity search to build a matching engine for unstructured data. After trying libraries like FAISS, they found none met their needs for features and scalability, according to Qdrant. Vasnetsov wrote his own production-ready vector search engine from scratch, and he is now co-founder and CTO of Qdrant.

Leading a Search Team at Tinkoff.ru

Vasnetsov studied computer science at Bauman Moscow State University, according to his CV. He worked as a programmer at Mail.ru and then at Tinkoff.ru, where as machine learning tech lead in the search department he headed a group of two data scientists and a Python developer. In January 2020 he became lead data scientist at MoBerries, an HR matching platform, where he led development of a neural search engine matching vacancies with candidates.

Publishing the First Version on GitHub

The first version of Qdrant was published on GitHub and quickly drew interest from developers, Qdrant says. Feedback and questions from developers and startups convinced the founders to formally establish the company. Qdrant is built in Rust. Vasnetsov is based in Berlin, Germany, according to his CV.
