Milos Rusic
Co-founder and CEO
deepset
Milos Rusic is co-founder and CEO of deepset, the Berlin, Germany, company behind the open-source Haystack framework for building search and language applications. He founded it in 2018 with Malte Pietsch and Timo Möller.
Meeting Malte Pietsch as Students
Rusic and Pietsch met while studying at the Technical University of Munich in Germany, according to Berliner Wirtschaft. "Our passion for maths and stochastics attracted us to machine learning," Rusic told Future of Computing. After their studies both worked at other startups, and they became convinced that better tools for natural language processing would matter to all software products.
Picking a City for deepset's Headquarters
When deepset was set up at the end of 2017, Pietsch was already living in Berlin and Rusic was living in Munich. "The decisive factor for us was that the market for talent here in Berlin is simply more convincing," Rusic said, adding that international talent was easier to find there. In April 2022 the company raised a $14 million Series A from investors including Google Ventures.
On The MAD Podcast in 2023, he described how Haystack breaks applications into chunking, storage, retrieval, and generation, and why enterprise language-model products need continuous evaluation and monitoring after deployment.
