Bootstrapped Feature flags
Rometsch wants feature flags and remote config to stay open-source and self-hostable so teams are not trapped in a closed toggle silo.
Ben Rometsch is co-founder and CEO of Flagsmith, the open-source feature flag service. It started as a side project at the software agency he ran in London, England, he told Scaling DevTools.
Watching a Dot-Com Agency Flame Out
After university he wrote software at a management consultancy, then joined a dot-com agency that "managed to last about a year and a half before it flamed out," he told the Craft of Open Source podcast. With a friend from another agency, he started his own software agency.
Forty Thumbs-Up on a Firebase Issue
The agency scored side-project ideas during downtime, and feature flags won because the team were the target customer. A comment asking why Firebase Remote Config had no web support got about 40 thumbs-up on GitHub, which they took as validation, he said in the Scaling DevTools transcript. Rometsch, Kyle and Matt Auer, now CTO, started building in their spare time in 2017.
