Which one fits
Descript edits footage you already recorded, while HeyGen makes video with no camera at all.
Choose Descript if
- You edit podcasts, interviews or tutorials, where most of the work is cutting what people said. Descript lets you edit video by editing its transcript.
- You want cleanup tools in the editor. Studio Sound, filler-word removal and clip creation come with paid plans.
- You want to start free. The free plan covers text-based editing.
Choose HeyGen if
- You need a presenter on screen without filming one. HeyGen generates video with AI avatars, including custom avatars of your own people.
- You translate videos for other markets. Creator supports 175+ languages and dialects, and Pro lets you edit and proofread the translated script.
- You want to try it free. The free plan makes three one-minute videos per month.
What buyers say
“Descript is better if you’re editing real recordings like a doc. HeyGen is better if you need an avatar to say the script without you on camera.”

“HeyGen for talking-head marketing clips. Descript when the source is a podcast or screen capture you still want to cut by transcript.”
Independent_Fan_115 · r/lumalabsai · · source
“Descript is what our podcast team uses because they edit video by editing the transcript. HeyGen is what marketing uses when there is no footage, and the translated versions save a lot of time, though the avatars still read as avatars.”
